Due to clues found in Uncle Edwin Thornton's Research Papers, we have been able to locate Mary Jane Claughton's
Parents, family group and a bit of history & data about them. This was located on ancestry.com and a great find
utilizing a Google search!
Parents of Mary Jane Claughton were:
Richard Alexander Claughton and Susan Printz.
A note indicated the following:
Richard A. Claughton died in St. Albans, West Virginia. He was blind for a number of years.
In his younger years he was a blacksmith and a Methodist Minister. Last number of years a Minister, after the death
of Susan Printz. Richard A. Claughton, 39 years old, married again.

We have found that Susan Printz died in 1842 and that Richard remarried to one Susan H. Camper born 1805.
They were married 26 Dec. 1845, in Botetourt County, Virginia.. No children found for this union. You will note
in a quote from the Methodist Conferences book of 1900 that follows later, it states he married three times. This would
indicate another wife sometime between Susan Printz died in 1842 and his marraige to Susan H. Camper in 1845 (she was b. 1816,
West Virginia), due to this Susan H. Camper being located on Census forms with him 1870, 1880. Unless she died sometime
during the 1880's and he remarried in his late 70's or early 80's. She died _________ in Guyandotta, West Virginia. More
research is needed here. He is listed on the 1870 Census as age 64, Guyandotte, Cabell, West Virginia
When all is said and done, all children were born of Susan Printz.
Richard Alexander Claughton was born 15 Feb. 1806, Virginia and died 8 June 1900. he married Susan
Printz on 25 August 1825 (she 19 years of age). They were married in Alleghany County, Virginia.
Of the eight children found listed as born to this marriage, we take issue with the sixth child being of
this union for reasons you will note immediately; although we will include this questionable info & data with that of
the rest of the family on the premise that there may be some validity to a small bit of it, such as a female child.???

1845. This couple are located on the 1900 & 1910 St. Louis, Mo Ward 13 Census. He was b. 23 Mar1824, d.6 Jan1863
at 38.

The above Stephen Kelly Woods m. Elizabeth Huneke on 22 Nov 1888 in Pacific, Mo. She b. 1868 d. 1926.
On Census listings 1900 through 1920 they lived St. lois, Mo. they had 7 children;

1852 to James M. Johnson b. about 1838. Married in Seldalia, Mo.

harriett loved with her son, Claude, at the time of her death on the third floor of the Dr. Wood building
located on the southwest corner of Second and Ohio streets, Sedalia, Mo. Harriett's funeral service book took place
at the First M. E. Church, South. The following was written about the Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church outh in the
1879-1890 City Directory: "The church was located on Third Street, between Lamine Street and Washington Avenue, Rev. E.G.
Frazier, Pastor. Seats Free." Harriett's gravesite is in Crown Hill Cemetery (Block 17, Lot 26) in Sedalia, Pettis Co.,
Mo. It is owned by Elizabeth Stahl, who was her son's (Adolphus P.) mother-in-law. The sexton's records indicate
that Elizabeth Stahl purchased a lot (contains 6 graves), however, only Harriett and an infant child of Adolphus are buried
there. It is unknown if the other graves are occupied.
(7) William Francis Claughton b. 10 Apr 1839 d. 1920 age 81 Married in 1873 at age of 34 to Rosa Gray.
Children: Frances P. b. 1875, Oda P. b. 1878 & Dina Kate b. 1882
William Francis Claughton is living in kanawha, West Va. in 1880
and Upper Falls, Kanawha, West Va. in 1900.
On the 1880 Census is listed:

In 1900 at age 60 lived in Gigelow, Holt, Mo. Listed as living alone, Single. Nothing Further.

Richard served as a private in the Civil War in Company E, 6th Missouri Cavalry. (Box 0003809, EXCT
#0003, Rocord #00002637) per Ancestry.com's Civil War Muster Rolls database retreived on Feb 4, 2000. I (K. Scott) sent
for his military service records on June 21, 2002. The only information available was 3 muster roll cards for a three
year service, enlisted Newton Co., Mo. on September 13, 1862. There is also a card reflecting that a R. Clawlon/Clawton
was on a list for Col. Thompson;s Regiment Calvalry of non effective men, dismounted and unarmed, that were taken to Searcy,
Arkansas on July 26, 1863.

CompRichard Alexander Claughton
was born in Louisa County, Virginia, February 15, 1806, and
passed away from earth June 8, 1900. It is due to us and to the deceased to say that on account of brother Claughton's having
been blind for many years previous to his death his books and papers were scattered and records of his work are not to be
found, so that we are dependent upon the memory of some of his friends for what we have. Brother Claughton was the son of
a Baptist minister, and at an early period in life he was deeply convicted of sin and thoroughly converted to God. He was
impressed that it was his duty to preach the gospel, and entered the ministry of the Methodist Church in Virginia.
Previous to the war of the states, he transferred to the Western Virginia Conference, where he spent a short time; he then transferred to the St. Louis
Conference, where he spent a few years, and was returned to our Conference, where he served the Church faithfully until old
age disqualified him for duty, and about twenty years ago he was placed on the superannuated list. Brother Claughton was married
three times, and was the father of several children, but his wives and most of his children preceded him to the grave. He
was a man of strictest honor and integrity, and was in the highest sense a Christian gentleman. He was a fine scholar, a good
theologian, and an able expounder of the word of God. In all of his affliction he was submissive to the will of God, but he
became weary and longed to depart and be with Christ. His life was pure, his work faithfully performed, and his death was
most triumphant. May his mantle fall on his brethren who remain on the field!
